Vian's account of British carrier strikes supporting Okinawa

A memoir follows British strikes on Formosan airfields and the decision to remain on station as kamikaze attacks battered American forces off Okinawa.

Notes

In Vian's account, low cloud and Japanese radio jamming prevented coordination of a planned attack on Matsuyama, so the Avengers switched to port installations, shipping, and a chemical plant at Kirun. The air-group leader's own flight attacked the airfield and nearby rail, factory, and bridge targets. Two Fireflies intercepted five Japanese bombers heading towards Okinawa, shooting down four and damaging the fifth. Hellcats and Corsairs later intercepted a separate attack before it reached the fleet, although a damaged Hellcat's pilot died during the forced landing. Vian and Rawlings agreed to extend operations while American forces endured heavy kamikaze attacks around Okinawa. Spruance welcomed the proposal, and the replenishment plan was reorganized to permit refuelling at sea.
