How the British design changes the comparison

A proposed British comparison substitutes nine-gun fast battleships for the slower twelve-gun American ships.

Notes

The hypothetical British ships exchange some American firepower for greater speed. Seven ships with nine guns each would bring sixty-three heavy guns against the Japanese force's fifty. Their proposed 28-knot speed would leave only a two-knot disadvantage, making Japanese disengagement more difficult than against the slower American model. Greater British protection would also change the balance. The Japanese model's 30-knot speed is itself a rounded approximation of 29.75 knots. These calculations motivate a further comparison that has not been demonstrated by the battle shown.
