Recent launches kept strengthening the Grand Fleet

British launch dates and the wartime acquisition of foreign orders show how a large commercial shipbuilding base fed modern capital ships into service.

Notes

Grouping Jutland’s capital ships by launch year shows how much recent construction Britain brought to the battle. King George V-, Orion-, and Iron Duke-era ships gave the Grand Fleet a large cohort only a few years old, while German contemporaries often took longer to complete. Agincourt, Canada, and Erin had originally been ordered for foreign customers but were absorbed into Royal Navy service when war began. Their presence shows that Britain’s naval advantage extended beyond Admiralty orders to yards capable of competing for international work. Even after removing those foreign-order ships, the British flow of modern hulls remained substantially larger.
