Chapter · 1:56:54-2:05:29

A British-led peace creates a different interwar order

The imagined settlement limits German maritime power, may preserve monarchies or federations, and changes the grievances that would shape a later European war.

Notes

In the proposed settlement, negotiations take place in London under Royal Navy pressure. Britain focuses on reducing German maritime power and naval infrastructure. Russia could retain a non-Bolshevik constitutional system, while Germany might preserve a monarchy under the crown prince and become more federated. Continued monarchy is not treated as a guarantee of moderate government: the crown prince's right-wing political interests remain a concern. A later great-power war is still possible. One imagined German grievance directs the stab-in-the-back accusation toward a navy blamed for losing the war while the army remained in the field.
