Why British industry led early rate-of-fire experiments

Britain's sustained naval spending and competing gun firms explain why so much early large-caliber rapid-fire work appears in Royal Navy records.

Notes

The British emphasis in this history reflects the scale of the surviving development record. Britain supplied unusually consistent naval-gun funding during the period, and several firms competed for the work while developing rival mechanisms. Other countries also experimented, though at a lower industrial volume. British records consequently provide much of the evidence for tracing how quick-firing guns advanced.
