Britain trades carrier quantity for a technology edge

Postwar Britain compensated for a smaller fleet by pioneering carrier systems that the larger US Navy then adopted.

Notes

The contrast is between American fleet size and British carrier experimentation in the late 1940s and early 1950s. British work with jets, angled decks, steam catapults, and landing aids drew sustained US Navy attention. Britain could no longer possess the most ships, so the ships and systems it retained had to be unusually effective for their weight and cost. Postwar naval influence therefore included shaping allied operating practice as well as fielding hulls.
