Germany bought early torpedo boats from experienced British builders while developing its own designs. The 1884 examples include Thornycroft, Yarrow, and J. S. White alongside Weser, Vulcan, and Schichau. These purchases tested the torpedo-boat concept during the transition away from spar torpedoes. Studying British boats let German yards and crews adapt ideas from a navy with longer experience of building and operating the type. Purchases of British-built vessels continued because that comparison remained useful.
