Britain’s battleship building supplies the Nimitz analogy

The Queen Elizabeth and Revenge programs show how a navy can turn a technological lead into production depth that forces an opponent into an unaffordable arms race.

Notes

The Anglo-German naval arms race explains why the Nimitz program mattered as a class as well as a design. The Queen Elizabeth class raised the price of first-line battleships, forcing the Imperial German Navy to compete with the British fleet and the German Army for scarce money. In this interpretation, a public campaign and a Treasury compromise expanded the following British program beyond the smaller initial request, producing enough Revenge-class ships to make Britain’s 15-inch-gun lead harder to answer. The analogy is industrial and political: Enterprise demonstrated exceptional capability, while repeat Nimitz construction converted a costly idea into fleet-wide pressure.
