The British armored-hangar battlecarrier proposal

A British paper design paired a full armored-hangar carrier arrangement with nine 16-inch guns, retractable deck sections, and severe crew-space compromises.

Notes

A published British proposal combined an Illustrious-style armored hangar with a Nelson-style battery of nine 16-inch guns. Its central flight deck and hangar were more complete than the aviation facilities fitted to Ise and Hyuga. Retractable extensions could cover the guns during flight operations but had to be stowed before the battery fired. Crew space was so cramped that another ship would have housed some of the complement in port. The design was more integrated than the Japanese conversion, yet its moving deck sections and poor habitability exposed the cost of combining both roles in one hull.
