Two navies prepared for night fighting

A 1939 Anglo-Japanese war could pit two highly developed but different night-fighting systems against one another.

Notes

Both the Royal Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy devoted serious attention to fighting after dark. Part of the Japanese emphasis is traced to its study of British experience and the lessons of Jutland. The two systems are treated as different without assigning either an automatic advantage. The United States, with greater numbers and less direct exposure to Jutland's lessons, had less incentive to seek night action. A clash between British and Japanese formations would therefore test doctrine, identification, and coordination as much as torpedo performance.
