Chapter · 17:53-21:53

British protection versus Japanese speed and torpedoes

A pair-on-pair simulation contrasts the slower, armoured all-forward British cruiser with a faster Japanese design carrying more conventional twin turrets and heavy torpedoes.

Notes

The Japanese counterpart gains roughly three knots and carries four twin 8-inch turrets with a strong torpedo battery. The setup asks whether speed can dictate engagement range strongly enough to offset British protection and forward firepower. Both sides use the same main-gun calibre, so the test isolates layout, armour, speed, and torpedo doctrine more clearly than a mismatched-gun duel would. It provides a concrete comparison between designs shaped by different operational assumptions rather than declaring one universal best cruiser.
