Why Britain and Japan both needed survivable carriers

Different industrial constraints pushed both Britain and Japan toward carrier survivability: distant repair yards for one and limited replacement capacity for the other.

Notes

British planners expected the major carrier war to occur in the Pacific while their heaviest repair infrastructure remained in the North Atlantic. A badly damaged ship might therefore have to survive a long voyage home before receiving full yard support. Japan's difficulty was its construction capacity, which could not match either the British Empire or the United States. These different constraints made damage tolerance and the preservation of every expensive carrier strategically important to both navies.
