British and American Pacific range needs differ

British ships operated along an overseas base chain and up Asian seas, while American forces needed the endurance to cross the Pacific.

Notes

Town- and County-class cruisers had sufficient range for Britain's existing Far Eastern deployments and overseas bases. Peacetime deterrence required regular visits to foreign ports as well as ships available at sea. British operations were expected to run through the South China Sea, East China Sea, and Sea of Japan. American forces faced a trans-Pacific approach, creating different endurance requirements. Fuel endurance has to be judged against those routes and the port visits required for presence missions.
