Larger allowances preserve different British and American carrier priorities

Extra displacement could bring Implacable- and Essex-scale capabilities forward while leaving Britain protection-heavy and America aircraft-heavy in their design choices.

Notes

The larger limit does not make British and American carriers identical. Britain can spend more weight on an armoured flight deck and enclosed protection suited to operations in northern waters. The United States can devote more of the same broad allowance to aircraft capacity and different internal protection choices. British experience losing parked aircraft overboard in the North Atlantic also preserves its reluctance to depend on deck parking, even when a larger hull is available.
