Brazil's Deodoro class and the road to dreadnoughts

Brazil's Deodoro class shows how a small navy's preference for armor and heavy guns anticipated its later dreadnought purchases.

Notes

The French-built Deodoro class packed 9.2-inch guns, torpedoes, and a heavy belt onto a ship of roughly 3,162 tons and only 15 knots. Scientific American dismissed the type as suited to second-rate naval powers while still expressing surprise at how much armor and armament fitted on so small a hull. That concentration challenges the idea that Brazil's later purchase of dreadnoughts came from nowhere. These coastal ships already expressed a naval preference for powerful guns and protection; greater national resources made the faster, fully capable battleship the logical next step.
