Using Brassey’s annuals as naval reference works

A comparison of Brassey’s naval annuals, their ship profiles, and the value of modern facsimile editions for studying fleets of the 1920s and later.

Notes

The 1923 Brassey’s Naval Annual combines national surveys, ship profiles, dimensions, advertisements, and strategic essays, making it much more than a list of technical data. The volume ranges from the Washington Conference and Pacific strategy to merchant shipping, naval construction, and charts of British naval stations. Its narrative style contrasts with the fact-focused Jane’s approach. Modern facsimiles may reproduce some images imperfectly, but they make these large and scarce reference works far more accessible than many originals.
