Boarding warfare long before Rome

Roman naval infantry tactics drew on a much older Mediterranean tradition visible among Carthaginians, Phoenicians, Greeks, and even Egyptian records.

Notes

The closing comment corrects a claim that Rome invented land-style combat at sea. Roman legionaries did make boarding central to famous naval victories, but the practice existed long before them. Rome learned within wars against Carthage, whose own maritime tradition descended from the Phoenicians. Phoenician and Carthaginian methods had already influenced Greek warfare, while Egyptian hieroglyphic evidence points to still earlier fighting in this manner. The correction warns against treating the best-known adopter of a technique as its inventor.
