How much were local civilians charging the British blockaders for laundry?
Short answerApparently little enough that ordinary sailors as well as officers could afford the service.
NotesSpanish civilians appear to have charged little for washing the blockaders' clothes. Even ordinary sailors could pay for the service, so clean laundry was not restricted to officers. Cash circulated across enemy lines through this small but regular trade. Shipboard hygiene was an affordable crew service.
