Inside Blanco Encalada's muzzle-loading battery

An interior photograph makes the ironclad's gun drill visible, from recoil along curved tracks to hauling the weapon in for manual loading at the muzzle.

Notes

An interior photograph shows one of Blanco Encalada's central-battery gun positions rather than only a plan view. Curved mounting tracks allowed the weapon to train across its firing arc. After firing, recoil carried the heavy gun inward along the track and the crew secured it in the loading position. Because it was a rifled muzzle-loader, the crew then worked at the front of the barrel before running the weapon out again. The image connects the ship's broadside geometry to the physical labour, space, and repeated drill required to keep a nineteenth-century heavy gun in action.
