Biter, Avenger, and Dasher in British service

Biter and Avenger joined operations including PQ 18 and Torch, while Dasher was lost in an internal explosion. Avenger sank with only twelve survivors after one torpedo, a much faster loss than Audacity's, reinforcing the grim nickname 'combustible, vulnerable, expendable.' The related American merchant conversions rapidly supplied flight decks for Arctic and amphibious work. Their service also exposed how aviation fuel and limited merchant-hull protection could turn a single hit or internal accident into catastrophic loss.
