Berwick served on the China Station before a temporary Mediterranean deployment during the Spanish Civil War. Her 1937-38 reconstruction replaced single four-inch guns with twin mountings, added light weapons, and installed a six-foot-deep belt of four-inch cemented armour from the armoured deck past the waterline. The armour’s source remains uncertain: the production records examined here show no clear surge, although relevant records may exist elsewhere. The refit improved a treaty cruiser’s practical survivability without producing an entirely new class.

Berwick’s reconstruction added anti-aircraft weapons and a deep belt, raising questions about how Britain supplied the armour.
