Bellerophon class as the first durable battle-fleet core

The Bellerophons matter less as famous individual ships than as the Royal Navy's first repeatable dreadnought battle-fleet core.

Notes

The Bellerophon class was the practical follow-on to HMS Dreadnought rather than a footnote to her. Their broadly standardised 21-knot, 12-inch-gun design gave the Royal Navy experience in building and operating a coherent dreadnought force. That repeatability mattered because the service learned by constructing, manning and manoeuvring several similar ships as a battle fleet. The resulting capability was an essential foundation for the Grand Fleet, even though the class is often overshadowed by later, larger ships.
