Britain's real dreadnought advantage was industrial capacity

Britain's edge in the dreadnought era came from shipbuilding infrastructure and sustained naval investment rather than a monopoly on technology.

Notes

Britain entered the period with enormous pre-dreadnought numbers and an industrial system able to concentrate resources on the Royal Navy. Other powers possessed important technical strengths of their own, so British superiority depended on turning its yards, finances, and institutional capacity into ships. The Liberal government's wish to preserve Britain's global position while reducing expenditure created the central tension behind the Bellerophon story. Shipyard capacity, rather than a single secret technology, set the terms of the early dreadnought competition.
