Belleisle followed Royal Sovereign into the lee-column attack and came under fire from several allied ships. She lost her masts and could no longer manoeuvre. The damage also left her largely unable to fight back. Her crew kept the flag flying for forty-five minutes until following British ships reached her and provided support.
