Why Beatty's torpedo-farm carrier was a bad trade

Beatty considered packing a carrier with torpedo tubes, but gun range made a surface torpedo farm an unattractive combat system.

Question

Did anyone try to place as many torpedo tubes as possible on one surface ship?

Short answer

Beatty proposed a carrier-based torpedo farm, but the range disadvantage against guns made it a poor idea.

Notes

The concept sought to mount very large numbers of torpedo tubes on a surface hull. Admiral Beatty proposed turning a carrier into such a torpedo farm. The idea was a poor trade because torpedoes must close much farther than naval guns before they can be used effectively. Concentrating them on a valuable surface ship would therefore expose the platform before its main weapon reached useful range.
