Bearn's aircraft lifts created obstacles when raised above the flight deck. Any one of the three could disturb airflow and interfere with takeoff or landing. Their steel structure also presented a collision hazard unlike a barrier intended to make a crash survivable for the aircrew. The conversion of a Normandie-class battleship still produced a working carrier, but its aircraft-handling arrangements obstructed the operations they were meant to support.
