Chapter · 9:36-10:20

Béarn as an Atlantic convoy escort

Atlantic convoy escort and raider searches offered Béarn useful work away from concentrated enemy air power.

Notes

Béarn provided an additional flight deck for escorting convoys and hunting surface raiders in the North and South Atlantic. Those duties remained useful despite the carrier's limitations. Operations within reach of strong land-based air forces in the Mediterranean were much less attractive. The proposed Atlantic role depended on avoiding enemy carriers and large concentrations of land-based aircraft.
