Béarn's lifts and the danger of paper solutions

Béarn's type-specific aircraft lifts illustrate how an ingenious paper arrangement can obstruct real flight-deck operations.

Notes

Béarn shows how individually interesting design ideas can interact badly in service. Separate lifts for fighters, scouts, and strike aircraft sound efficient until a crowded hangar makes it difficult to move aircraft between them. Some lift roofs also rose above the flight deck, interrupting takeoff and landing operations while the lift was in use. The example prepares the viewer to judge the Alsace proposals by their operational interactions rather than by attractive specifications alone.
