Béarn's lift traded rapid launches for space savings

Béarn's combined aircraft lift and maintenance hoist saved weight and space, but its five-minute cycle prevented rapid launches.

Notes

Béarn used the same machinery to lift aircraft and hoist them for maintenance. That saved weight and internal space, an attractive solution on paper. In practice, maintenance could occupy the lift just when the crew needed to bring aircraft to the flight deck, and a cycle took about five minutes. Carrier machinery must support fast, dependable flight operations; saving weight or space has little value if the arrangement delays every launch.
