Chapter ยท 23:26-27:05

An isolated starship needs expeditionary depth

Long independent voyages require spare personnel, engineering depth, stores, medical resilience, and the everyday support systems that keep a crew effective.

Notes

An expeditionary BC-304 cannot call nearby support when machinery fails or casualties occur. Its crew must cover maintenance, food, clothing, health, training, and watchkeeping while retaining enough redundancy to fight after losses, making the published complement implausibly small. Long isolation also creates ordinary institutional demands, including professional education and the upkeep of living systems. Automation can reduce labor without eliminating the personnel depth required for resilience and self-repair.
