Why the Defiant is called a guided-missile battleship

An initial reading of the BBG announcement connects the battleship label with age-of-sail firepower and distinguishes that interpretation from dreadnought design.

Notes

This December 2025 assessment uses the public announcements available the day after the proposal, without claiming inside knowledge of the design. The BBG designation identifies a guided-missile battleship. One interpretation of the name looks back to first- and second-rate ships of the line, whose concentrated firepower could overwhelm smaller warships, rather than requiring the dreadnought balance of armor, speed, and guns. A French frigate destroyed by a ship-of-the-line broadside at the Battle of the Nile supplies the historical example. Under that interpretation, battleship denotes the most lethal surface combatant outside the carrier and submarine categories.
