Why battleships versus carriers is a false interwar choice

Interwar planners commonly pursued mature battleship power and developing naval aviation together rather than betting national security on only one system.

Notes

Enthusiasm for battleships did not necessarily imply opposition to aircraft carriers. British and American planners pursued both, retaining a mature striking weapon while developing naval aviation whose full capability had yet to arrive. Committing wholly to either type exposed national security to the risk of guessing wrongly about the pace of change. Italy's different approach grew out of bitter rivalry with its air force and confidence that bases around the peninsula and Mediterranean could cover the fleet.
