Battleships once deployed their own torpedo boats

Late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century capital ships sometimes carried small torpedo boats, giving a distant battleship its own deployable fast-attack craft.

Notes

Capital ships once carried small torpedo boats as part of their battle equipment. Some proposals and ships used stern ramps to launch and recover them, placing a feature that can look modern within much older experimentation. On a distant station, a battleship could release one or two torpedo craft even when no independent flotilla was available. Torpedo boats later evolved from auxiliary weapons of larger ships into independent offensive craft.
