Battleship Potemkin shows how food and film shape naval memory

Eisenstein's film shaped popular memory of the Potemkin mutiny. The food dispute behind the revolt leads into a comparison with British officer and crew provisions.

Notes

Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin became a popular reference for the mutiny, so familiar accounts can follow the film more closely than the historical events. Rancid meat caused the actual revolt in the account given here: the medical and logistics officers allowed it aboard, and the doctor certified it as fit. British officers of the same era generally received broadly the same food as their crews. They could have servants prepare or serve it more comfortably, while differences in alcohol reflected their ability to buy more expensive drinks.
