Battlecruisers as a spectrum of design intent

Battlecruisers, fast battleships, and battleships sit on a spectrum shaped by mission and design balance rather than tonnage alone.

Notes

Battle cruiser can mean either the broad two-word concept or the narrower design category beside the fast battleship. Speed, firepower, armor, and intended employment all matter, while displacement can mislead because balanced fast capital ships often become especially large. Modernization can move a ship along the spectrum, but cannot cheaply transform its basic design into something several categories away. Design balance and mission provide a better basis for comparison than official labels alone.
