In this classification, HMS Tiger is a more substantial battlecruiser than the original Renown and Repulse designs, which began as Fisher's lighter ships and were later modernized. Tiger also has the greater standard displacement. Scaling Tiger to Hood's size would produce a much heavier ship. Hood's armour and subdivision fall well short of the fast-battleship standard used in this comparison, while Tiger offers the better example of a battlecruiser moving in that direction. The Queen Elizabeth class approaches the same design problem from the battleship side.

HMS Tiger, Renown and Repulse, Hood, and the Queen Elizabeth class show why protection and design ancestry matter when classifying battlecruisers.
