Why battlecruiser conversions remained fast carriers

Removing capital-ship armor reduced displacement and preserved speed, although the converted hulls still retained a large turning circle.

Question

Were large battlecruiser and battleship carrier conversions liabilities because they were slow to turn?

Short answer

No. Removing armor made them lighter and fast, while their wide turning circles were normal for ships of that size.

Notes

A large battlecruiser or battleship hull did not automatically become a slow carrier. Conversion removed much of the armor weight for which the original machinery had been designed. The resulting ship could therefore retain considerable speed even though its turning circle remained large. The broad maneuvering circle followed from hull size and was not proof that the conversion was an operational liability.
