Caught between the battle line and the scouting role

The Ersatz Yorck's armour and guns were formidable, but its speed left it too slow to dictate terms against Renown and too lightly protected for a battleship's job.

Notes

The British and German approaches moved in different directions: Britain built a fast battlecruiser, while Germany edged toward a ship expected to serve as a second-line battleship. In critical areas, the German belt reached 11.8 inches against roughly 3 to 6 inches on Renown. The advantage was less sweeping across the rest of the armour scheme: deck protection was 1.2 to 3.1 inches against Renown's 1 to 2.5 inches, and the German coverage still fell short of a battleship's. Ersatz Yorck was too lightly protected for a true battleship's job and too slow to dictate an encounter with a British battlecruiser. Its eight 15-inch guns and thicker belt could give it the advantage in a close gunnery fight. A properly handled Renown could avoid that duel, shadow the German ship, report its position, and draw it toward heavier units of the Grand Fleet.
