Sweden used naval control of the coast to land 5,400 troops behind the Russian advance. The supporting force included two ships of the line, a frigate, 44 gun sloops, six galleys, and roughly twenty to forty transports. Kamensky turned north to confront the landing force before another Swedish column could reach him. His roughly 3,000 Russians occupied high ground, and the Swedes attacked uphill despite the difficulties this created. The Swedish defeat forced a withdrawal toward Ratan, but the fighting also left Kamensky's army too damaged to face the other approaching Swedish force.
