Scout carriers could provide convoy air cover from the beginning of the war. Their aircraft would force submarines down and interfere with attacks, while the carrier itself adds guns within the convoy. Emergency construction could supplement the initial force as Germany builds more submarines. Simpler escort carriers using merchant hulls could begin arriving around 1940-1941. Continued air cover across the Atlantic would protect the imports on which Britain's wider production and war effort depend. Scout aircraft could also hold contact with Admiral Graf Spee or Deutschland so cruiser groups could converge, since those raiders could not outrun British cruisers.

The Battle of the Atlantic with carrier cover from the start
An existing scout-carrier force and early emergency escort-carrier production could provide air cover across the Atlantic sooner.
