Royal birth and the obstacles to Battenberg's promotion

Royal connections brought extra scrutiny, while Battenberg's German name made promotion a recurring political test.

Notes

Royal birth could make naval promotion harder because a conspicuous failure would embarrass both the service and the family. Other backgrounds brought different obstacles: middle-class officers had to negotiate aristocratic society, while men promoted from the lower deck had to prove their education and ability to communicate up and down the chain of command. Battenberg faced repeated parliamentary objections to promoting a naturalized officer with a German name ahead of British-born candidates. Senior admirals nevertheless supported him, including moderates in both the Fisher and Beresford camps. His ability to win that support is evidence of professional standing despite the opposition.
