Why Battenberg recorded agreements after arguing in private

Battenberg's written approvals followed private debate, so the paperwork alone can conceal how he influenced decisions.

Notes

Battenberg often settled disagreements with Churchill face to face before recording his agreement on the paperwork. Reading those written approvals alone can therefore give a misleading impression of passive acceptance. His work with Army colleagues also included making his case, persuading them, and securing the outcome he wanted. Fisher's public arguments and long written attacks left a very different record and created enemies of their own. Jellicoe's confidence in Battenberg's administrative ability is another reason to distinguish his quiet manner from weakness.
