Battenberg's qualifications for First Sea Lord

Forty-four years of naval service and a record of senior command made Battenberg an experienced Admiralty leader.

Notes

By 1912 Battenberg had served in the Royal Navy for forty-four years. His record included the Anglo-Egyptian War, command of the Atlantic Fleet and Home Fleet divisions, service in Naval Intelligence, and senior administrative appointments. Fisher had campaigned for his appointment as First Sea Lord, while Jellicoe trusted his administrative ability. Battenberg preferred to resolve disagreements face to face and then record the agreement in writing. Among the First Sea Lords who served between Fisher and Beatty, his one year and 325 days in office was the longest tenure. His preference for quiet negotiation is therefore a poor measure of his ability or experience.
