Why Barbarossa becomes harder to launch

Loss of Scandinavian inputs, vulnerable Romanian oil, and competing European crises could delay or constrain Barbarossa rather than simply cancel it.

Notes

Germany does not certainly abandon an invasion of the Soviet Union, but eastern operations require extensive logistical preparation while ore, aluminium, and oil supplies are under pressure. Railways, roads, fuel stocks, and other infrastructure cannot simply be advanced on Hitler's preference, so an earlier attack is not a practical shortcut. Arctic convoys would be safer, bombers in Norway could threaten German supply systems, and a weakening Italy might demand German attention elsewhere. Together these pressures make the historical timetable much less plausible.
