Banishment and the danger of scattered fleets

In Raymond L. Weil's Banishment, political disbelief leaves the Human Empire's fleets dispersed as warning reports turn into signs of a coordinated attack.

Notes

Raymond L. Weil's Banishment places the Human Empire's Eighth Fleet on an anti-piracy patrol while relations with the Confederation deteriorate. High Prince Aiden fears war, but his father sends him away from the capital partly to reassure the population. Increasing enemy fleet activity is followed by lost contact with systems and several imperial fleets. Aiden recognizes that hundreds of dispersed imperial warships face an opponent with thousands, while reports of bombed cities remain unconfirmed. He recalls available forces and takes the 112 ships of the Eighth Fleet home, hoping that concentration can still affect the outcome. The book's battle writing receives praise, and Weil's family continued the series after his death.
