Baltic naval stores and British restraint

Britain's need for Baltic naval supplies constrained support for Prussia against Sweden and encouraged Prussian doubts about depending on an ally's fleet.

Notes

Prussia's lack of a navy left a psychological lesson about the limits of relying on British maritime support. Alliances did not erase national interests, and Britain would not help Prussia in ways that endangered its own fleet. Sweden remained a vital supplier of naval stores, so the Royal Navy avoided alienating it even while Prussia fought the Swedes. This logistical dependency also explains the Baltic's long importance in British naval planning, including the Copenhagen operations and the First World War.
