How plausible are Babylon 5's Earth Alliance warships?

Starfuries and rotating gravity sections receive praise, while the Omega's destroyer label prompts a debate about ship size, role and changing fleet doctrine.

Question

How realistic are the Earth Alliance ships in Babylon 5?

Short answer

Only partly. Starfuries and rotating gravity sections are credible features, while the destroyer label is disputed between size-based and role-based interpretations.

Notes

Babylon 5's Starfuries receive praise as credible small craft, as does the restriction of artificial gravity to rotating sections of Earth Alliance ships. The Omega's destroyer label is more contentious: the ship is described as cruiser- or battleship-sized and about 200 metres longer than the Nova-class dreadnought. A competing explanation treats the label as a change in doctrine after the Earth-Minbari War, when separate ship roles gave way to an all-purpose combatant. Carrying fighters aboard those destroyers also removes the perceived need for dedicated carriers. The designs reflect the technological future that their creators could imagine at the time.
