The Aylwins were evolutionary improvements within the Cassin design family. Changes in testing and design refined the thousand-tonner without creating a wholly new type. All burned oil fuel, and greater stability gave their guns a steadier platform. These were useful fighting ships, though a class of four did little to solve the numerical shortage.
