Britain's aviation-fuel pipelines outlasted the war

A wartime fuel network shows how defence infrastructure can remain nationally important long after the emergency that created it.

Notes

Britain built aviation-fuel pipelines around the country as part of its wartime support network. The pipes still exist and can be traced by someone who knows which signs and maps to examine. Their continued status as critical national infrastructure shows that support investments can outlive the platforms and campaigns they first served. Maintaining a useful network may be far cheaper than rebuilding it after disposal.
