Available designs, operational needs and Malaysian delivery expectations

An available design can start construction sooner, but naval capability still depends on delivering ships into service. The Malaysian example ends with uncertain commissioning expectations.

Notes

An established programme offers the practical advantage of being ready to build when a navy places its order. That availability is the explanation offered for Malaysia's Gowind choice over the more conceptual alternative at the time. Operations must be carried out with the ships a navy actually has in service, so design preference alone cannot meet an immediate requirement. The resulting Malaysian vessels receive a favorable assessment of their capability. The closing delivery discussion gives an uncertain commissioning expectation of December 2026 or January 2027 for a Malaysian ship, alongside a statement that it was going for sea trials. Its full-load displacement is put at 3,150 tons. The commissioning estimate remains an expectation at the time of the episode.
